What is Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is an infection of your toenails. It’s caused by several common types of fungi that are everywhere in our environment. Like any other infection, it’s always possible to be re-infected, which is why it’s important to follow all of the protocols and instructions set up by your doctor for the best long-term results. Genesisplus Laser offers the safest and most effective treatment for your fungal infection.

Nail fungus is an embarrassing chronic condition that impacts your quality of life and can lead to serious health problems for those with diabetes or immune disorders. Nail infection can start as a result of a family history of susceptibility, increasing age, poor health, nail trauma, warm or moist climates, exposure to infected nails in sports/ fitness and communal bathing areas, and tight shoes.

What are the signs and symptoms of nail fungus?

Yellow streaks in the skin under the nail, or nail bed, and on the underside of the nail

Buildup of bits and pieces of skin and nail fragments under the nail

Discolored and thickened nail that may separate from the skin under the nail

Brittle, broken, and thickened nails

White spots or streaks on the nail surface

Soft and powdery nail surface, which appear as the infection worsens

Damaged, crumbly, and brown or gray nail surface, with no separation of the nail from the underlying skin

Nail infection can cause permanent deformity of the nail, which can interfere with your being able to wear shoes, walking, sports, and other activities.

The treatment of nail infection is difficult because the infection is under and inside of the nail, which makes it hard for other treatments to reach and destroy the infection. Treatments such as medicated nail polish or oral medications may be associated with side effects or serious drug interactions. Home remedies such as using bleach, vinegar, mouthwash, or household cleaners to resolve the problem are often tried but, ultimately, fail to resolve it.

What to expect

While lasers may seem scary to some, they use safe light energy and are used daily for cosmetic procedures. Now that same state-of-the-art technology can be used to treat toenail fungus. This safe and painless laser treatment treats the fungus and kills it without any damage to surrounding nail or skin.

You can visit our office for a consultation where you will be evaluated as a potential candidate for care. The laser treatment will take about 30 minutes to treat both feet. As each toe is treated by the laser you will feel a mild, warming sensation. The laser treatment may potentially consist of up to 3 sessions beginning at day 1, 4 months after the first treatment and 8 months after the second treatment, if necessary. Shoes and nail polish can be worn immediately after treatment. The doctor will discuss post-treatment care to avoid fungal re-infection.

Significant improvement can be seen over one year, but many times you will notice results within 2-4 months, depending on how quickly your toenails grow. New, clear growth begins to appear at the bottom portion of your nail (by the cuticle) as the diseased portion of your nail grows out. The nail must complete a full nail growth cycle to assess complete results, which can take up to one year.
